2017 DevOps Trends: My 6 Favorite Articles

DevOps promises to improve application development agility, efficiency and reliability; yet, the concept is only about 9 years old.  New technologies are frequently introduced that promise significant improvements in the development process, and so each year, it is valuable where DevOps is going.  In this article, I will highlight six posts that prognosticate on 2017 trends.

The new buzzword for DevOps is “continuous.”  We have continuous integration, continuous delivery, continuous obsolescence and for many developers, continuous consumption of Five Hour Energy.  Yes, the world of DevOps has radically changed development as we know it and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

The Top Priorities and Setbacks Enterprises Face In Application Development

There are few things more valuable to any business than direct customer feedback. It’s how we test ideas – old and new. It’s how we decide to change. So we asked TechValidate to help us understand what customers and potential customers are thinking. They’re a trusted neutral party and have helped us validate our own thinking – and sometimes prove us wrong. Recently, TechValidate compiled two sets of survey responses from targeted recipients across a range of industries. One survey targeted existing Actifio customers, and the other focused specifically on application developers who are not current clients. The returns provide some fascinating results that will help to verify and quantify Actifio’s part in helping customers to gain financial benefits. Results also make clear the opportunity developers have to gain time and performance advantages as they come into the fold.

Copy Data Management = Polymorphism

I’d like to share a fascinating insight from a customer. Our sales team asked me to join them for a face-to-face discussion with the company’s VP of development and his team. After the introductions, he explained the key problem. His Dev & QA teams were struggling to execute their unit testing, build integration testing, and QA testing fast enough, in spite of automation. They identified that too many critical issues were being found late, in UAT, which delayed their release cycles and led to a lot of heartburn inside the company. When they looked into the cause of the quality issues, they found that for 80% of the release cycle they were testing against low-fidelity synthetically generated test data, instead of data from production. The code testing against such dummy data did not expose the code defects earlier in the test cycles.

How to Leverage Data Virtualization in Test Data Management

We’ve seen the benefits that digital businesses can get by adopting DevOps methods for application development. At the same time, the substantial importance of business applications cries out for the fastest, most efficient development resources. If DevOps is about collaboration and process, application execution and output are all about the power and capabilities of technology.

The Definitive Question: Should Your Organization Adopt DevOps?

Digital businesses depend on information intelligence. Most of that intelligence comes from applications. So, why are so many businesses missing the application streamlining opportunity that comes from DevOps? That collaborative blend of application developers and IT operations is a culture shift that breaks down silos and promotes accelerated development. Becoming a digital business means way more than having the right technology. It’s the right mix of fast, smooth operations resting on an intelligent information base. That’s the idea of DevOps. That and bigger profits.

How DevOps Can Crush Application Release Cycles

We were recently joined for a Webinar by Jay Lyman of 451 Research. Our purpose was to highlight results from a 451 Research project and share some specific insights about enterprise DevOps and cloud adoption. I also presented an overview of how Actifio helps streamline and automate DevOps. I’ll summarize Jay’s key points here but I encourage anyone interested in the topic to view the entire webinar which includes the Actifio DevOps capabilities overview. Link.

How to Develop Higher Quality Applications Faster with DevOps and Copy Data Virtualization

If you’ve ever worked anywhere near an enterprise IT department, you’re familiar with the internal scuffle that exists  between the development and operations teams. At no fault of their own, they’re doing what they’ve been charged to do. Dev, tasked with building new applications to advance the business, needs to get things done faster. At the same time, Ops is pushing for things to go slower, tasked with safeguarding data and infrastructure to protect the business. With totally opposing missions, it’s no wonder why things get done at a less efficient pace than ideal.
