SQL Database Cloning with Actifio – How It Works

 

Hello. I’m Jay from Actifio. Today, I’m going to talk about how Actifio works for SQL database cloning. Traditional approaches database cloning are typically slow, expensive and require a lot of DBA and admin time. Therefore, corners are cut resulting in poor quality, long application development life cycles and lost revenue opportunities. Actifio solves these challenges by reusing back up copies to create virtual full clones that can be mounted instantly without much storage overhead. Here’s how it works.

First, we captured application consistent point in time incremental forever copy of the SQL server database using patented Actifio technology. Now, that we have that copy, developers and testers can log into a self-service portal with their own credentials to initiate the cloning process. To clone a SQL server database, the user triggers an Actifio workflow that will automatically present a thin clone on demand, which can be presented to any server for instant access purposes. As an optional step, this workflow can trigger external tools that do masking or subsetting to modify the SQL clone to ensure information compliance.

Once the SQL clone is presented by the connector to the target server, the connector will mount the disk volume containing the clone. The connector will then bring a database online using native SQL functionality and developers and testers will have the complete read and write enabled, virtual full SQL database ready to use in their application development process.

Now, because these are virtual full copies, developers and testers can mount multiple rewritable SQL database copies simultaneously while only utilizing megabytes instead of terabytes of space, which results in faster application development and improved quality, which much lower TCO. Plus, if the organization has an established CI/CD process using tools like Ansible, Puppet, Chef or others, Actifio integrates with these tools to present database clones as part of the process, further enabling automation as part of cloning.
