SAP HANA Database Cloning with Actifio – How It Works

Hey, everyone. I’m Jason from Actifio. Today, I’m going to talk about how Actifio works for SAP HANA database cloning. Traditional approaches to database cloning are typically slow, expensive, and require a lot of DBA’s and admin’s time. Therefore, corners are cut resulting in poor quality, long application development life cycles, and lost revenue opportunities. Actifio solves these challenges by reusing backup copies to create virtual full clones that can be mounted instantly without much storage overhead. Here’s how.

First, we capture an application consistent, point in time, incremental forever copy of the SAP HANA database using patented Actifio technology.

Now that we have that copy, developers and testers can log in to a self-service portal with their own credentials to initiate the cloning process. To clone an SAP HANA database, the user triggers an Actifio workflow, that will automatically present a [think 00:00:53] clone on-demand, which can be presented to any server for instant access.

As an optional step, this workflow can trigger external masking or sub-setting tools to modify the SAP HANA clone to ensure information compliance.

Once the SAP HANA clone is presented by the connector to the target server, the connector will mount the disc volume containing the clone. The connector will then bring the database online using native SAP HANA functionality, and developers and testers will have a complete read/write enabled virtual full SAP HANA database ready to use in their application development process.

Now, because these are virtual full copies, developers and testers can mount multiple read/writable SAP HANA database copies simultaneously, while only utilizing megabytes, instead of terabytes, of space.

This results in faster application development and an improved quality with much slower TCO. Plus, if the organization has an established CICD process using tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef, Actifio’s integrated with these tools to present database clones, further enabling automation as part of the cloning process.

Best of all, this can be done on-premises, in any public cloud, or in hybrid cloud. So, if you want automated, self-service cloning for SAP HANA databases, with minimal storage overhead, request a free demo of Actifio.
