Cloud Snapshot Management

Jason Brown:
Hey everyone. Jason from Actifio here. Today I’m joined by Ashok and we’re going to talk about Actifio 10c, which is our upcoming release at the time of this video shoot. And we’re going to talk about a specific feature called Cloud Virtual Machine Snapshot Management. Ashok, welcome.

Ashok Ramu:
Thank you. Thank you.

Jason Brown:
Tell me about what is this new feature offering in Actifio 10c.

Ashok Ramu:
Actifio pioneered the concept of application level application, consistent backup using agents. With the advent of cloud and the scale at which the virtual machines are coming up, the hyperscalers have provided the capability for native VM snapshotting in the cloud. So this is something we are now integrating to become fully integrated and make it a first class citizen inside Actifio. Actifio 10c will support snapshotting of cloud native workloads in addition to the application consistent workloads. Essentially we carrying forward everything we have adding on cloud snapshotting to that.

Jason Brown:
So what’s the benefit of this then? I’m aware that you can do backup in natively in cloud, so how does this help with that or work better than that as well?

Ashok Ramu:
That’s a great question. Cloud native snapshots, like you said, are available natively in the cloud. Anybody can consume it with or without Actifio. The problem is as your data sprawls, there number of elements you need to track becomes really hard. So as you start tracking these disparate elements and aging them out, it pretty much becomes that you’re writing a new product in practice. It’s a huge IT burden and operations burden. So what Actifio is doing is essentially we are taking away the management burden of it. So we track all the resources, the number of disc snapshots you have, which regions you have snapshots, and which projects are going into etcetera so that it becomes a central pane of glass to manage. So if you think of it, you have 10,000 VMs with 6 disks each: That’s like 60,000 disks you have. And if you have to manage three snapshots per desk, you’re talking about 180,000 entries, which makes it really, really hard to tackle. So Actifio eases that, gives you the VM centric view which the end user cares about.

Jason Brown:
So how do you foresee our customers using this?

Ashok Ramu:
So a lot of our customers are on the cloud leveraging, you know Actifio for their SAP HANA or Oracle or SQL. As they rapidly scale out, they will lose the hybrid approach. For the databases and their crown jewels, they will continue to use Actifio’s application consistent backup mechanisms because it’s incremental forever gives you tremendous value for point-in-time recovery and for the file system-like workload on the metadata and the other application ecosystem workloads, they could just very well use cloud snapshots. Again, customers have the options to go either way. Our prediction is for the file system and the lighter weight workloads use cloud native snapshots because it’s there, it’s available and it’s fully integrated into this ecosystem for your single pane of glass across the entire multi-tier application.

Jason Brown:
That makes sense to me. Ashok, thank you very much. If you want to learn more about 10c as well as see other videos we’ll be shooting what the various features. Check out www.actifio.com/10c Thank you!
