Cybersecurity is a concern for employees at all levels of all organizations today. Ransomware is just one of the newest and most dangerous fronts in the battle to keep your organization’s web content and data safe. Ransomware is devious; after infecting an unsuspecting host, the software encrypts all data it can find in the IT infrastructure. Once encrypted, the data becomes inaccessible and the hacker demands money in return for the decryption key.
Actifio provides a platform that is designed to help enterprises with their DevOps initiatives, such as application testing and development, as well as disaster recovery and database clones, all in an approach that cuts cost while improving agility and security.

In the performance of critical missions, United States defense agencies must have absolute certainty that essential data is both protected and accessible. One such agency was challenged by lengthy backup and recoveries of very large Oracle databases. Data recovery times often stretched to 10 or 12 hours, impacting productivity. Individual schema recoveries used an expensive and inefficient workaround solution that meant doubling daily backups. Ongoing expenses were continuously increasing and operational complexities drained valuable staff time. The defense agency’s prime contractor chose Actifio to simplify operations by streamlining database backup and recovery. But broader uses for adopting an enterprise data as a service strategy soon became clear. Actifio eliminated redundant backups and enabled self-service support to accelerate application development.

In this demo we have set up a typical corporate environment where there is Microsoft Windows file server sharing corporate data to corporate endpoints. Unfortunately, one endpoint becomes infected with WannaCry, which in turn infects and encrypts all of the corporate data on the file server. Using Actifio, we recover the file server to a known good point-in-time in less than a minute, regardless of its size, and demonstrate that even if we make a mistake, Actifio’s copy data is immutable and can not be compromised by malware.

Anyone in IT these days is painfully aware of the challenge organizations face dealing with ever-increasing amounts of data they need to properly store and protect. The irony is that the majority of data growth is not just the new data per se but the multiple copies of data the organization needs to meet many specific needs such as daily backups, snapshots, copies that feed analytics systems, disaster recovery (DR), and test/dev work, to name just a few. In many cases the ratio of copy data to the original are approximately 20 to 1.
