NPG deploys Actifio Protection and Availability Storage (PAS) Platform Integrated with IBM Hardware to accelerate delivery of Cloud Backup, Disaster Recovery and Test and Development services
Waltham, Mass. and St. Joseph, Missouri – April 18, 2012 – Actifio, the Protection and Availability Storage (PAS) platform company, today announced that News-Press & Gazette Co. (NPG) recently launched a new suite of cloud services based on Actifio’s PAS platform integrated with IBM hardware. The solution from Actifio and IBM enables NPG to offer multiple Cloud services – including instant backup, disaster recovery, and test and development – from a single virtualized platform while reducing capital expenses by up to 90 percent. NPG is now able to accelerate delivery of cloud services for its customers while delivering critical data management services at a compelling price point and an attractive cost structure.
To date, service providers and Value-Added Resellers (VARs) have not been able to deliver on the economic promise of the cloud due to their reliance on legacy technologies and IT architectures that create silos of physical infrastructure and applications. By combining server, storage and data management virtualization technologies with a purpose-built Service Level Agreement (SLA)-driven operational model, Actifio and IBM remove the cost, operational and complexity barriers that have prevented partners from providing in-demand cloud-based storage solutions to their clients.
With Actifio PAS in place, NPG has accelerated its service provider business by targeting the needs of companies ranging anywhere from enterprise class to local small and mid-size businesses. Companies need cost-effective disaster recovery-on-demand, backup-as-a-service, data access on-demand and business continuity without the expense of opening and managing their own data center location.
Since 1845, NPG has delivered news and information to customers across the Central and Western United States. Its properties include daily and weekly newspapers in Missouri and Kansas, and 14 broadcast outlets consisting of radio and television stations in California, Idaho, Oregon, Colorado and Texas. In an effort to diversify its business and leverage an extensive network infrastructure and extremely talented IT staff after divesting its 45 year old Cable/ISP business that served over 83,000 customers, NPG selected Actifio PAS as the technology enabler for new, managed and self-service cloud data management solutions.
“Actifio’s turn-key solution enabled us to very quickly deliver multiple data management cloud services that are in high demand in our key markets. With its easy-to-use interface, Actifio PAS enabled us to capitalize on the huge market demand for cloud services – without being chained to legacy technology and infrastructure,” said NPG Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Liam Catherall. “By leveraging Actifio’s PAS, we were able to break into the cloud data management service market and build out differentiated services easily without technology constraints in only 60 days.”
NPG customers can leverage these cloud services to enhance overall data protection capabilities across their organizations while dramatically improving data protection services – without the added expense of opening and managing a second data center location.
“2012 is the year of cloud data management – especially for service providers,” said Ash Ashutosh, CEO, Actifio. “They need to respond to the overwhelming user demand to transform IT into a service and drive down operational and capital costs. The Actifio PAS platform and IBM partnership allows them to meet this market need for cloud services and deliver a fundamental transformation of IT as a service.”
Actifio, the Protection and Availability Storage (PAS) platform company, pioneered the industry’s first storage system optimized for managing copies of production data, eliminating redundant silos of IT infrastructure and data management applications. By introducing virtualization into data management, Actifio delivers an application-centric, SLA-driven solution that decouples the management of data from storage, network and server infrastructure and reduces costs by 10X. Actifio has helped liberate IT organizations and service providers of all sizes from vendor lock-in and the management challenges associated with exploding data growth. Actifio is headquartered in Waltham, Mass. with offices around the world. For more information, please visit: https://www.actifio.com/
About NPG Co.
The roots of the News-Press & Gazette Co., or NPG Co., stretch back to the days of the Wild West in St. Joseph, Missouri, with the publication of the first Gazette in 1845. Headquartered today in St. Joseph, the company has been owned and operated since the 1950s by the Bradley family, now in its fourth generation. Still going strong in the newspaper business, the NPG family now includes broadcast operations, spanning several states, and commercial printing. This diversification provides a solid foundation for growth. Yet, the company takes greatest pride in the quality of its employees — those who have contributed to its past successes, individuals and teams working tirelessly to help the company to grow and innovate today and those just joining NPG and will carry us into the future.
