A Competitive Corporate Cloud Blend

Unauthorized use of public cloud services is a contentious issue we encounter as we design the initial Actifio architecture for new clients. Every CIO faces it, and most are scratching their heads about how to address it. One recent example is a large North American enterprise with locations spread across 50 states, Mexico, and Canada. This company is highly dependent on sophisticated central IT services. No surprise that financial controls, operational management, information security and IP protection are all of primary importance.

Big data isn’t the problem, data copies are

Big Data. Everyone’s still talking about it – and it shows no sign of stopping as the use of computers, mobile devices and the Internet continues to increase.

Guest Blog: IDC on Optimizing Test Data Management for DevOps

More and more of our customers are using Actifio to optimize their approach to test data management, breaking free of traditional infrastructure limitations to dramatically cut time to market for new applications and features. For an independent perspective on the trend, we asked IDC analyst Melinda Ballou to take a look, and share some perspective on critical application development and test functions. In the below guest post Melinda highlights how software creation and deployments are directly influenced by the quality of data lifecycle management. Citing recent IDC research, she notes the effects on data quality that are directly linked to application development speed, quality, control and cost. And, as she points out, all of these are addressable through new approaches provided by automation and data virtualization.

Cascading Benefits

Big dreams. We all know a business that started with one powerful idea, a dream that continued to build impressive successes from unexpected and subtle origins. It’s not just a matter of growth but of connecting the dots to related opportunities. Entire new ventures are fueled by what is learned in the initial undertaking. It takes imagination, innovation and, most of all, openness to the cascading benefits of new ideas.

It Takes a Partner

You can’t do it alone. You need partners. We all do. That’s especially true for something as strategic, complex, and rapidly advancing as enterprise IT in the cloud. Partnering with Service Providers (SPs) brings a rich opportunity to accelerate success. Our new Service Provider Marketplace is designed to help.

Software-Defined Questions

Hardware is solid. We can see it and touch it and feel comfortable knowing what it does, how it works and where it is. Software, not so much. Software lives someplace but we don’t necessarily know where. Unlike hardware we may not even know it’s present – or missing. So, the idea of software defining data centers, networks and storage may be a bit unsettling. Marc Andreessen’s comment that “software is eating the world” might call up images of Godzilla and T Rex. Nicholas Carr asserts, “automation can erode… expertise”. It separates us from fully understanding how things work. He argues that, with all its benefits, software and automation can also bring essential dangers that fewer of us will know how the world really works. Sounds frightening. But isn’t it already true?

High-Fidelity Data & The Myth Busters

High-fidelity. For audio, it means minimal distortion in sound reproduction. If you’re old enough, you’ll remember the “Hi-fi” as a high-end vinyl record player. Before “stereo” the best sound available was “Hi-fi”. Audiophiles still use the term to define sound that is reproduced accurately, exactly.

Data Virtualization, Backups, and the Reduction of Stress-Test-Stress

We start with data backup. We always start with backup, using a unique platform that virtualizes data and manages dramatic reductions in the number of data copies. We don’t stop there, but that’s where we always start.

Enterprise Data Control – How bad could it be?

Maintaining data control is an essential objective for Actifio customers. It’s much more than managing data copy counts. It’s providing data protection while managing appropriate access and assuring necessary compliance. It’s protecting the enterprise. In all of this, attaining confident data governance and control presents a broad set of challenges. It starts with clear visibility. How many data instances exist as backups, snapshots or development copies? What data is being copied or left unprotected? Who has access? Is there an audit trail? What steps are needed to improve control of enterprise data, to keep it both useful and safe?

Ash’s Thoughts on Dell’s Acquisition of EMC

The acquisition of EMC by Dell clearly marks a turning point in the ever-evolving landscape of enterprise IT. What’s less clear is just what we’re turning toward, and I’d like to share a few thoughts on that very important question.
